Space Pirates

It’s the final frontier, and someone’s here to claim it. With the new Leland Mining Corporation’s base on Europa promising an end to once–profitable asteroid mining operations in the belt colonies—cementing the moons of Jupiter as the future hub of intergalactic trade—the fate of the once flourishing Martian mining colonies lies in jeopardy. Without steady demand from Earth, these former jewels in the crown of the galactic empire have had to turn to…shall we say…less above board methods to preserve their livelihoods. However, disturbing recent developments on Earth have the potential to spell doom for our intrepid adventurers. In this, the first ever meeting of rival pirate factions from across the belt colonies, can bad blood be forgotten? Will competing ambitions come together to save their fortunes? Can enemies become friends? Is there any hope for the future of belt colonies? “If you were waiting for the opportune moment, this is it.” – Captain Jack Sparrow

Chair

Welcome aboard delegates, and buckle your seatbelts for the ride of a lifetime!

My name is Aishi Gulati, and I’m a second year student studying Economics and Global Studies here at UC Berkeley. As a Houston native, I expect to hear “Houston, we have a problem,” at least once during committee. I’ve been a part of UCBMUN since my first semester at Berkeley, and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. In my free time I like attempting to raise plants, create art (in some form), and lift weights. Since the background of this committee is entirely fictional, delegates have the chance to go to infinity, and beyond. I’m incredibly excited to see how it all plays out!

Best,
Aishi Gulati

Crisis Director

Ahoy delegates!

My name is Antonio Kobe Lopez and I am extremely excited to be the Crisis Director of BearMUN’s Space Pirates Committee! I am a 4th year studying Economics and Public Policy at Berkeley, but outside of my academic focus I am a massive science fiction lover. I grew up obsessed with sci–fi classics like Star Trek, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, and Firefly. There were few things I wanted more than to explore the stars. But growing up, I’ve come to realize that you don’t even have to leave our solar system to see how big space is, just look at Leviathan Wakes or The Martian. Maybe one day we’ll explore other stars, but in the meantime there’s more than meets the eye to our solar system. In the future, Space Pirates like you may be lurking around every asteroid and moon, but the vast emptiness of space cuts both ways. Will you succeed in reviving the high seas in the highest skies, or will your empire crash back down to Earth, I can’t wait to find out!

Sincerely,
Antonio Kobe Lopez
