Agatha Christie's Death on the Nile

June 23rd, 1932, 6:59pm. The yacht SS Osiris is approaching Cairo, ready to cruise the Nile upstream. Its wealthy passengers are all gathered on the yacht deck to observe the Egyptian sunset above the Mediterranean sea. It is even rumored that a world–famous detective, Hercule Poirot, is on board, along with other celebrities and their servants. Later that night, the passengers will get dinner in the lavish reception room, and then be entertained by a game of Poker or Blackjack. They will then return to their golden suites while the crew cleans up the interiors. No one suspects that the following morning, Hercule Poirot is going to be found dead in this very reception room. An assassin is on the loose—and you’re trapped in a boat with them. This committee, heavily inspired by Agatha Christie’s work and in particular Death on the Nile, will allow delegates to explore their inner detectives. No prior knowledge of her works is required, and in fact will not help delegates in this committee; we are looking for original arcs and plot twists. Murder, poison, everything is encouraged as you try to solve the murder… get creative! We highly recommend exploiting your character’s portfolio powers as well as taking advantage of the behind–closed–doors setting. Good luck, and have fun!

Chair

Dear Delegates,

It’s my absolute pleasure to welcome you to the Death on the Nile committee. My name is Laia Malburet–Breuil and I will be your committee chair! I am a first–year at UC Berkeley double–majoring in Global Studies and Media studies (I’ll be a Sophomore during BearMUN). I’m French and Spanish from Barcelona. I’m involved in UCBMUN which is very exciting; I’m also a marketing specialist for UC Berkeley Student Services. I’m also involved in Women in Weightlifting! Outside of those involvements I love to read (as you may have guessed from the committee topic already), watch Gossip Girl and Friends, and hang out with friends.

I can’t wait to meet you all and observe as your arcs unfold and directives pass. This committee allows for absolute freedom—imagine yourself as in the story. Don’t be afraid to have your main character moment, we love to see it! Embrace your inner 1930s–detective self during this committee. I know you all are first–time delegates so don’t be afraid to reach out if you need anything, anytime. I hope you all have fun and are as excited as I am!

Sincerely,
Laia Malburet-Breuil

Crisis Director

Hi Everyone!

I am Sehr (she/her) and I’m extremely excited to meet all of you at BearMUN! I’m a sophomore from Lahore, Pakistan and I am majoring in Political Science and double minoring in Comparative Literature and Environmental Science, Policy and Management. Besides academics and MUN, I spend most of my time rewatching my favorite shows, listening to music, or swimming laps in the pool—that’s if I’m not on her nth cup of coffee at the cafe cramming away. I like to consider myself an avid reader, and I really appreciate Agatha Christie and other mystery literature and arts for the boundless creativity they inspire. I’m incredibly excited to see what delegates have in store for the weekend!

Best,
Sehr Ali Dada
