Hallyu: Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism 2016

Hallyu is the name given to the phenomenon of Korean entertainment's explosion in popularity over the span of the last two decades. This committee starts in 2016, an era where k-pop is yet to break into the mainstream of the west, and has limited success in Japan and China. Heads of South Korea's major entertainment companies and governmental officials from the ministry of sports, culture, and tourism seek to work together to push Hallyu into the mainstream in large markets such as China and the USA. This committee's goal is to utilize hallyu as both a form of soft power and a financial vessel, increasing South Korea's position on the world stage. Each delegate will have to find the fine balance between the motives of their company or office and the benefit of the nation. It is up to you all to decide the shape Hallyu takes as its popularity surges outside Korea.

Helen Yang

Chair

Hello Delegates, I am Helen Yang, and I am incredibly excited to be your chair for Hallyu: Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism 2016 at BearMUN this year! Currently, I am a third year pursuing dual degrees in Computer Science and Business Administration, with a minor in Data Science. Aside from chairing, I have also been the Director of Technology & Operations for UCBMUN XXV and XXVI. Outside of UCBMUN, I love to binge sci–fi and fantasy novels, exploring new restaurants, and of course, listening to K-pop. From idol drama to East Asian politics, I can’t wait to tackle this exciting conference with you all!

Best,
Helen Yang
